Fire Prevention and Public Education are mandated of the province through the Fire Protection and Prevention Act and enforced locally by fire prevention inspectors using the Ontario Fire Code, which in part states that, "unless otherwise specified, the owner shall be responsible for carrying out the provisions of this code.” The fire department is mandated to assist building owners or tenants with meeting the requirements of the Code and in many cases requires the Approval of the Chief Fire Official to ensure compliance.
