The Ontario government is investing $34,978,397 in critical water infrastructure to help build up to 3020 new homes in the Municipality of Brighton. The funding is being delivered through the second intake of the Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund, which includes a total of $325 million to help municipalities build, repair, rehabilitate and expand drinking water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure across Ontario.
“Vital infrastructure is integral to supporting rural Ontario continue to grow and provide necessary services for all residents,” said David Piccini, MPP for Northumberland-Peterborough South. “Through the House-Enabling Water Systems fund, Brighton will be able to make necessary upgrades to their wastewater system that will enable up to an additional 3000 homes to support families in our community. Our government is dedicated to building homes to support rural Ontario.”
Brighton will use the funding to replace the lagoon-based wastewater treatment system with a brand-new mechanical sewage treatment system. This new plant will lower the environmental impact of sewage treatment and improve the services provided to all those living in Brighton. This project will extend the reach of these services and therefore increase housing supply and support economic growth in the Municipality of Brighton.
“Having a strong infrastructure foundation with connections to water systems is the first step in delivering the housing Ontario needs,” said Kinga Surma, Minister of Infrastructure. “Our government is making targeted investments through the Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund to safeguard growing communities and ensure families and residents have access to safe and reliable water services.”
Through the second intake of HEWSF, the government is supporting 23 water infrastructure projects across the province. In total, Ontario is investing nearly $1.3 billion, through the first and second intakes of HEWSF, to support 77 water infrastructure projects that will help municipalities build approximately 600,000 new homes.
Through the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program and the Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund, Ontario is providing nearly $2 billion to support housing- and community-enabling infrastructure and build more homes across the province.
“This investment is a testament to our commitment to growth and development in Brighton. By upgrading our wastewater systems, we not only ensure the reliability of critical services but also create a foundation to support future housing developments and meet the needs of our residents,” said Brian Ostrander, Mayor of the Municipality of Brighton. “I extend my sincere gratitude to Minister Surma, the Minister of Infrastructure, our provincial partners and in particular to MPP David Piccini for recognizing the importance of this initiative and for his support in helping us realize our vision for a vibrant and sustainable community. Together, we are taking significant steps towards building a brighter future for all residents of Brighton.”
