Hansen Road Culvert Replacement
Project Summary
The Municipality of Brighton completed the replacement of the Hansen Road culvert at the intersection of Hansen Road and County Road 30 to improve drainage, enhance roadway safety, and preserve an important historical water control feature. The existing deteriorated cast-in-place concrete box culvert was replaced with a modern corrugated metal pipe arch (CMPA) culvert while maintaining the function of the original inlet control structure.
The project included:
- Removal of the existing cast-in-place concrete box culvert.
- Installation of a new corrugated metal pipe arch (CMPA) culvert.
- Construction of a new inlet control riser and safety grate.
- Reconstruction of the roadway over the culvert crossing.
- Replacement of steel beam guide rails and end treatments.
- Installation of erosion protection and site restoration.
- Restoration of the roadway surface and shoulders.
A key feature of the project was the construction of a new inlet control structure designed to replicate the hydraulic function of the original concrete structure. The existing inlet historically impounded water upstream to provide a reliable water supply for a former cheese factory in the area. The replacement structure was designed to preserve this historic water level and storage function while improving public safety, hydraulic performance, and long-term durability.
