Walas Street Park Pathway
Project Summary
The Municipality of Brighton completed the construction of a new multi-use pathway through Walas Park to improve pedestrian connectivity, accessibility, and active transportation opportunities between Walas Street and Raglan Street. The pathway provides a safe, convenient route for residents while enhancing access to neighbourhoods, recreational amenities, and the waterfront.
The project included:
- Construction of a new 3.0 m wide asphalt multi-use pathway.
- Installation of a new storm sewer and subdrain system to improve drainage.
- Construction of new concrete sidewalks and pathway connections.
- Installation of a new pedestrian crosswalk, including pavement markings and signage.
- Restoration of disturbed landscaped areas.
Engineering design was completed by Municipal Staff. Construction was completed in conjunction with the Walas Street and Harbour Street reconstruction projects.
Following construction, localized asphalt surface failures developed in several areas of the pathway due to prolonged saturation caused by high groundwater levels, standing water within the park, and the limited grades available to promote positive drainage. Surface asphalt repairs were completed in May 2026 to restore the affected areas. Municipal staff continue to monitor the performance of the pathway and are evaluating additional grading and drainage improvements in Walas Street Park.
