Backyard Hens
The Municipality of Brighton permits residents to keep backyard hens on eligible residential properties, subject to the requirements of the Backyard Hens By-law and applicable zoning regulations. These standards are intended to promote responsible animal care while protecting the health, safety, and enjoyment of neighbouring properties.
Before bringing hens onto your property, please ensure that your property meets the requirements of the Backyard Hens By-law and the Municipality's Zoning By-law.
Key Requirements
- Backyard hens are permitted only on properties that meet the zoning and lot requirements established by the Municipality.
- Roosters are not permitted.
- Hens must be housed in a secure, well-maintained coop and enclosed outdoor run designed to protect the birds from predators and prevent them from escaping.
- Coops and runs must meet the required setbacks from neighbouring properties and dwellings.
- Chicken coops and runs must be kept in a clean and sanitary condition to prevent odours, pests, and nuisances.
- Owners are responsible for ensuring hens do not create a nuisance for neighbouring properties.
Planning Your Coop
Before constructing a chicken coop, residents should:
- Confirm that backyard hens are permitted on their property.
- Review applicable zoning regulations and setback requirements.
- Determine whether a building permit is required for the proposed structure.
- Ensure adequate space is available for both the coop and enclosed run.
